I have been meaning to post about this for ages, and have finally gotten around to doing so. I took a pottery course with my mom and sister earlier in the year. At first, I was a little hesitant, I remember doing pottery basics in school and wasn’t too thrilled with it. But now I’m going to share why you should take a pottery class.
First, you get to take everything you make home! I made in total in this course (and def could have made more) 16 pieces including a new fav mug! Mugs are hard by the way, also plates and well anything really at first.
You also get into the zone while on the wheel. For someone like myself who always has their mind spinning with a million thoughts, this was heaven. It was HARD, not gonna lie, really hard. I would not say I am anywhere near good at it hahaha, but the more you use the wheel, the better you get. I struggled with making my cone shape before it become a bowl or mug etc.
Glazing is loads of fun! This was my fav part, I loved trying out different glazes, texures and colours. You can also carve in stuff to your pottery piece, but I opted to not really do so this time around.
Meeting new people is another great thing. We sometimes saw the same people each session who were there for studio time. But then other new people would appear and we would all bond over how terrible we were at it all compared to our instructor haha.
It’s a new skill you can check off your list! My mom and I plan on going back for another round this summer. I’ll be watching tons of YouTube videos prepping myself on what I want to make and pick up tips for that wheel lol.
Biggest tip, besides just listening to the instructor and relaxing, wear clothing you don’t care about haha. I wore baggy sweats, t-shirts and shoes I didn’t care about getting clay all over. You can bring an apron (which we wore) but ya, it can get all over your shoes.
So those are my reasons why you should take a pottery class soon. Stay tuned and follow my Friday Roundups to keep up to date!
The studio we went to was ClayZone Ceramics Gallery in East Vancouver. Bev is the best!
Have you tried pottery? Any tips for myself?
So much fun! And a little stressful, not gonna lie 😉
