I believe when you feel put together, you instantly have more confidence. This can be with the way you dress, a fresh manicure, a little lipgloss or having your hair done. When I went to Suki’s Salon in Kitsilano to get my hair a fresh colour and cut, I walked out with a bounce in my step. Having been notoriously noted for quality and customer satisfaction I was more than excited to get the ends of my dry, summer hair snipped.
These little things really do matter in your day to day life. When I let my hair go, I start to feel a little shy about my appearance. I do go to a lot of events each month, meet with clients in person for my agency and even meeting friends. With every one of these I feel I want to look my best.
Most of us accept that looks matter. We know that our appearance impacts our personal, social and professional lives. We also know that how we feel influences how we look and vice versa — a phenomena I call beauty self-esteem. Although we’d like to believe “what is inside counts most,” scientific evidence, as well as common sense, tells us that an appealing appearance, good health and hygiene positively impacts our lives.
Many men and women associate confidence with feeling in control, and hair is one way most of us can be in charge. For example, hair can be altered through cutting, colouring and highlighting, but controlled through straightening, curling and styling. Styled, well-kept hair gives us the external appearance of being well managed and it can contribute to feeling that way internally. Some people say that a manicure or pedicure creates a similar sense of feeling in control.
You may not know that Suki’s also offers many more services at their salons. You can see the full list of services they provide here. The founder, Suki Takagi, started her career in Beverly Hills, apprenticing for Vidal Sassoon in the 1960s. She and her husband then moved to Vancouver and Suki opened up her first salon in South Granville in 1972.
As soon as I went to an event that week after Akari and Mirka did up my hair, I felt so much better about the way I looked. My grey’s were gone, the tone of my hair was freshened up and Mira gave me a good trim with more layers for extra volume.
I tell myself I need to make it a standard to get my hair done every 6 weeks. I’m at that age (well have been for awhile) where my greys are every protruding into my hairline, and come back with a force every 4 weeks.
Akari even let me know that my natural hair colour is on the red side of brown. I didn’t realize that or to be honest, forgot what it looked like after all these years. So that’s why I have previous hair styles where it becomes reddish after just a little bit. So no more cool tones in the future.
I love the layout of Suki’s, it’s so inviting and open. You see someone for each step of your appointment. I had Akari for my hair colouring, Mirka for my cut and someone else washes your hair. They offer so many other services, and I love that there is one in Kitsilano, just a few minutes away from my house.
Mirka took 1.5” off my ends, and it was an instant life to my hair. She went in and added more layers and gave it more depth that way. I loved the Bumble and Bumble Volume spray and picked up the Candalie Oil for my ends.
I’ve already booked my next appointment to get a few subtle highlights with Akari next month and a fresh trim again with Mirka.
Thank you to Suki’s Kitsilano for the new hair! I absolutely love how it looks and the team were ever so nice!
Hair looks amazing! Love Sukis!!
