Anyone who knows me will know how much I love my dog Piper. He is my little Dachshund/Jack Russell mix. As it being International Dog Day today, I thought it would be fitting to do a little post about this guy. This year he turns 14, and has been in my life for 11 years now.
I remember the day we got brought him home from the BC SPCA. My mom saw his profileΒ online and took my siblings and IΒ to see him.Β We had two dogs at home already (Rudy and Penny), and were not new at adopting dogs from the shelter. He looked just like his profile picture and was adorable. We took him out after two minutes to walk around the property. Right away my mom pulls out her cell phone to call my dad and tell him we were taking him home with us.
Piper took to me right away, I think since Rudy and Penny were already attached toΒ my brother and sister, he and I developed our ownΒ bond. He followed me around, slept in my bed, cried when I left to go to school or work or out with friends. He was and still is my best friend. Curtis and I joke that Piper is also our little furry kid, who attends daycare and has about as many toys as a small child. If you have never owned a dog, you may not know the special bond you can have with them. They are different than cats who are more independent (we had a few growing up). Dogs love to please and love you. They are generally gentle souls who need nurturing. This is why it is a shame when they are kept in puppy mills or abused by their owners. I have to say after bringing homeΒ two dogs from the shelter, I would do it again. It is the most rewarding thing you can do in life, bringing home a helpless animal, who only wants a home where they can be unconditionally loved and spoilt.Β Some even are given a second chance being a rescue dog or assistance dog.
Please if you are considering to own a dog, take into thought adopting one from a shelter such as the BC SPCAΒ or maybe another local rescue. It was the best thing I ever did.
Ending this postΒ withΒ aΒ few more pictures of my Piper, enjoy!
