A couple of weeks ago Curtis and I dined at Nicli Antica Pizzeria in Gastown. They have consistently fulfilled Vancouverites pizza cravings for a few years now. Nicli was the first pizzeria in Vancouver to be certified by the Verace Pizza Napolenta and you can taste the quality. Nicli Antica Pizzeria honours the Neapolitan pizza traditions while highlighting the season’s freshest, local ingredients. Their woodfired pizza oven reaches 900F and cooks those pizzas in 90 seconds. They also recently won the Best Pizzeria in the 2015 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards and the 2015 Georgia Straight Golden Plates Awards.
Nicli is located on East Cordova in Gastown, next to sibling restaurant Nicli’s Next Door. The space is long but not cramped with their pizza oven in the corner and their large bar on one side. The colours are vibrant and the decor has a clean, modern look. If anything, I would also come to share a pizza and a cocktail at that bar.
We ordered two pizzas to share, the special of the day, the Napoletana and two Carpano Americano cocktails. This is my new cocktail favourite, especially if you enjoy a bitter cocktail. The addition of soda makes it refreshing.
The Napoletana has pomodoro, mozzarella di bufala, oregano, garlic, anchovies and fresh Italian parsley. The anchovies provide a nice saltiness and that mozzarella is creamy. I really enjoyed this one.
I ordered the special of the day. This was unreal; I would be happy having this each time and suggest they make it a permanent addition to the menu. It had a red pepper sauce, baby artichokes, Walla Walla onions, chilli oil and salami with a fior de latter mozzarella. Both pizzas had that light, fluffy crust with a nice smoky char flavour.
