Bedrooms should be a place where you linger and relax. Besides a soft spot to lay your head, what is it that a bedroom needs to keep you coming back for more? I tend to gravitate towards my cozy bedroom, getting snug under those covers when it’s chilly and let myself become overwhelmed by relaxation. My 7 tips will lead to bedtime enlightenment after the jump!
At this time of year, I change up our sheets, check our pillows for replacing, do a major cleaning and add in textures or elements.
With my tips, your new lounge space will quickly become your new cozy bedroom. So besides being a spot for a great nap and a good night sleep, you will want to stay in bed all day. Hit the snooze button one more time &Β keep calm and just dream!
1. Embrace Minimalism
This is a difficult one for me, but it seems to be the most important. To create calm in the bedroom, free it of clutter, not just the floor, but the walls too. Choose one or two pieces of art for one wall and leave the rest alone. Apply a “less is more” approach to the furnishings also. Thankfully our bedroom is small enough that I’m not overdoing it. I also believe in a clean room, feels like a larger room.
2. The Plush Factor
We’ve all heard this before, but spending a little extra on plush bedding is key. There is nothing better than sinking into a cozy comfortable bed. Spring and summer are great times to purchase down comforters and feather beds on sale, but you can still find a good deal leading up to the holidays.
For long I always wondered why hotel beds (not all haha) seemed so comfortable and cozy. I found out it is a combination of a mattress topper, good quality linens, down alternative pillows and a plush down comforter. Layering these items will create that soft luxurious feel. When choosing what colors to go for, stick to the neutrals. Colors like white, grey, beige and pale blue are popular for a restful environment.
3. A Noteworthy Night Stand
A sturdy bedside tabletop is another key element. Having a place to rest your glass of water and/or favorite book is key to your overall comfort and relaxation. I’m that person that needs to drink water in the middle of the night, I think I’m a mouth breather haha.
4. Let There be Light
Lighting is important in the bedroom. Natural sunlight is amazing during the day, but dimmed mood lighting is essential at night. Replacing your switch with a dimmer switch isn’t too difficult or expensive. A bedside lamp is also a great way to add subtle light at night.
5. A Rug to Hug
Have you ever hugged a rug with your feet? The right rug can give you a tiny foot massage before stepping into bed. Look for a thick shag rug or soft sheepskin for best results.
6. Mix Textures
Mixing textures, fabrics and colours in the bedroom will help make the room ooze comfort, warmth and relaxation. A blanket casually draped on the end of the bed gives a nice and lovely feeling. Try the trendy wool blankets, buy or make a DIY one.
7. Take a Seat
Having a place to sit down and remove your socks and shoes makes life a little easier. Whether it be a small side chair or a bench at the foot of your bed, try to make room for secondary seating. We don’t have room currently in our bedroom, but one day I would love a comfy chaise.
Another element that I wish we had room for is plants. They just bring a fresh feel to a room.
Hope these tips help you on your path to nighttime bliss. Do you have any other ideas on how to create serenity in the bedroom? We would love to hear them!
